藝跡文化十一月活動｜The Pull of The Stars - A Journey of One Japanese Translator

Ikumi Yoshida is a Japanese literary translator. After earning a master's degree at the University of Toronto, she worked in translation and interpreting in the Canadian film industry before moving to Tokyo in 2020. In 2021, she published her first book translation, Emma Donoghue's The Pull of the Stars.
Since then, she relocated to Canada and then to Hong Kong, while translating more than 10 books for Japanese publishers and actively working with the Japanese and Canadian film industry.

In this event, she will share her experience in starting her career as a literary translator in the midst of Covid-19 in Tokyo, and how she has navigated the Japanese publishing industry. She will also share, step by step, the journey of how one book is translated and sold at the bookshop. While doing this, you will get a glimpse of the challenges that translators face and the joy she experiences/brings to readers.
