Thomas Neumann has been travelling and photographing the countries of the former Soviet Union since the 1990s. The artistic works and travel photos created since then have been incorporated into the volume Exakte Vertrauensgrenzen. In it, the photographer follows the traces of an image and meaning of Soviet socialism on the ground after its promises of progress and a bright future had come to an end. His own origins make him travel with a certain wealth of knowledge and experience, but also with a sceptical curiosity. Questions arise about the self and its embeddedness in the collective experience of an abruptly ended ideological system that was actually designed to last forever. Neumann's archive offers no coherent narrative. His restrained pictorial observations invite us to embark with him on a journey in which the horizons of interpretation remain open.
